Language Opportunity Coalition
The Language Opportunity Coalition was founded in the summer of 2014 by MATSOL and Massachusetts Association for Bilingual Education (MABE), along with other education and community groups in Massachusetts. The goals of the Coalition are to 1) increase language learning opportunities for learning English, developing native/heritage language, or learning foreign language; and 2) ensure that all learners have equal access to a high quality education and professional opportunities. The Coalition is supporting two pieces of legislation introduced in 2015:
- “An Act to Establish a State Seal of Biliteracy”
- “An Act relative to Language Opportunity for Our Kids (LOOK)”

New Start: Supporting Multilingual Young Children and Immigrant and Refugee Families
Regional Trainings in partnership with Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition (MIRA Coalition), the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC), and the Office of Refugees and Immigrants (ORI). These full day workshops -- which will be held in Taunton, Worcester, Lowell, and Pittsfield -- are meant for EEC center and family-based childcare providers, Head Start programs, community-based organizations, and other EEC partners, including Coordinated Family and Community Engagement Grantees (CFCE), Child Care Resources and Referral Agencies (CCR&Rs), and ORI’s providers and their stakeholders. The New Start Trainings includes the following content areas and discussions: Immigrant and Refugee Demographics in Massachusetts and Regionally; ABC’s of Immigration & Refugee Law and Policy; Immigration Status & Access to Public Benefits; Working with Dual Language Learner Children & Families; Cultural Competency & Family Engagement; Being a Resource for Families. Mar 7: Assessing for Instruction: Important information for your English Language Learners
From Mass Reading Association: ACCESS provides important information for ELL students. The missing piece is the specific diagnostic information that helps inform daily instruction. We will demonstrate a great, quick phonics assessment the QRI, Qualitative Reading Inventory. This information will enable participants to design instructional plans. Join MIRA Coalition for our 2 day training for community leaders, students, activists and organizers advocating for social justice. Together, we will learn the impacts of structural racism to our democracy and participate in dialogues on how to address with powerful responses, learn and role play effective anti-racism strategies, how to build solidarity movements and more. CLiC, Douglas County (CO) Libraries and Unite for Literacy have partnered to provide access to more than 100 ebooks (more information on the project). These early literacy ebooks:
- are all original -- books carefully crafted to connect with young children and their families.
- have narrated audio support with an initial goal of supporting the 300 languages that are spoken in U.S. homes.
- offer photographs and illustrations to authentically depict a child's-eye view of the real world.
- are structured to reflect the most current research on the specific features that impact success for beginning readers of all ages.

Through an Immigrant Lens: PIAAC Assessment of the Competencies of Adults in the United States
This report uses PIAAC data to describe the English literacy and numeracy of adults in the United States and explore how these skills are related to key outcomes such as labor market participation, income, and health status. The detailed analysis reveals a number of findings regarding immigrants and their U.S.-born adult children, which taken together underscore deep social inequalities. Roughly 40 percent of immigrant adults lacked basic English literacy and 48 percent lacked basic numeracy in English. The authors point out that the PIAAC competency tests are administered in English, leaving non-English speakers at a disadvantage—regardless of their skills in their native language. View report...
