Change in Definition of Low-Income Students in Massachusetts
Massachusetts has scrapped a decades-old method for defining low-income students in public schools, resulting in a dramatic decline in the number considered to be living in poverty, according to a Globe review of state data. Now, less than half of Boston school students are regarded as being from impoverished homes, compared with the previous figure of about three-quarters. Chelsea, Lawrence, and other cities also saw big drops. Statewide rates dropped, but less dramatically. View article from The Boston Globe...

Alternative Measures of Socioeconomic Status in Education Data Systems
A new report from the National Forum on Education Statistics that evaluates the pros and cons of different systems of measuring socioeconomic status of students. It notes that the system based on free- and reduced- meal eligibility “is largely a measure of economic status and does not incorporate other components understood to be relevant to the measurement of [socioeconomic status], such as parent/guardian occupation and education.” View report...

Immigrant Student Success: Models and Tools for K-12 and Adult Educators
A free online workshop geared toward educators seeking to encourage the progress of their immigrant students for the benefit of the entire classroom. Through interactive webinars and live exercises with experts from the Internationals Network for Public Schools, Embrace Diverse Schools, World Education and more, participants will learn about asset-based models and techniques for capitalizing on classroom diversity. They will also gain ideas for classroom activities and lesson planning that can bring out the best in their immigrant students and benefit the whole classroom. The Integration Outcomes of U.S. Refugees: Successes and Challenges
The U.S. refugee resettlement program is the world's largest, accepting two-thirds of the 98,000 refugees who were permanently resettled in 2013. Because of the scale of the program and the growing diversity of resettled refugees, service providers face an increasing range of challenges.
