We invite our members to submit a proposal to share your ideas, effective classroom practices and research with our colleagues and fellow MATSOL members in the field of ELL/ESL/ESOL education. Proposals are due on December 1st. Sep 26: Free Workshop: Literacy Instruction for ELLs
Learn to use: Qualitative Reading Inventory (QRI) and Quick Phonics Survey (QPS). The QRI and QPS are valuable tools for providing information on the specific skills students need to make progress in reading. Attendees will receive an instructional planning guide to help them use literacy information to plan daily instruction. This FREE workshop is specifically designed for teachers working with ELLs. Special emphasis will be on students in grades 3 and above. Saturday, September 26, 2015, 10:00 to 12:00, Wakelin Room, Wellesley Public Library. This event is sponsored by the Massachusetts Reading Association. RSVP [email protected]

Nov 6: Student Immigrant Movement 10th Anniversary Gala
This fall, SIM will reach its 10th year as an organization developing and empowering immigrant youth from all over Massachusetts to challenge statewide and national policies, to open academic opportunities, combat racism, sexism and other isms, while creating a family of undocumented and unafraid young people. The 10th Anniversary Gala will feature keynote speaker Opal Tometi, Executive Director of Black Alliance for Just Immigration's (BAJI) and co-founder of #BlackLivesMatter, and recipient of SIM's Speak the Truth award. U.S. Department of Education Releases Fourth Chapter of English Learner Tool Kit for State and Local Agencies 
Tools and Resources for Providing English Learners Equal Access to Core Curricular and Extracurricular Programs, the fourth chapter of the English Learner (EL) Tool Kit, has been published online by the Office of English Language Acquisition (OELA), U.S. Department of Education (the Department). The Tool Kit is intended to help state and local education agencies (SEAs and LEAs) in meeting their obligations to ELs. It should be read in conjunction with the joint Dear Colleague Letter (DCL) on “English Learner Students and Limited English Proficient Parents” from the Department’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) and the Department of Justice (DOJ), published in January 2015, which outlines SEAs’ and LEAs’ legal obligations to ELs under civil rights laws and other federal requirements. More Tool Kit chapters will be made available in the coming months on the OELA English Learner Tool Kit web page, and will be announced in Nexus and on the NCELA website.

Maps of Individuals with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) 
This month marked 15th anniversary of Executive Order 13166, “Improving Access to Services for Persons with Limited English Proficiency,” requiring federal programs and activities to provide meaningful access to limited English proficient (LEP) individuals. In honor of this anniversary, the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division released several mapping resources that help identify the concentration of LEP populations at national, state, judicial district, and county levels: The “Language Map App,” allows users to view and download data on languages spoken by LEP populations, using an interactive map. Printable maps and other federal language mapping tools are available at lep.gov/maps

This free webinar will discuss the importance of policies and practices that are being used by agencies and community-based organizations across the country to equip refugee parents and children with the income, tools, and skills needed to improve economic stability. It will showcase organizations utilizing promising practices for establishing and implementing approaches that address the toxic stress and the loss of executive functioning has on refugee family and child well-being, while highlighting how programs utilizing individual and family strength-based approaches. Supporting Immigrant Students' Rights to Attend Public Schools
A new eBook from the Intercultural Development Research Association (IDRA), is available in English and Spanish. The education of undocumented students is guaranteed by the Plyler vs. Doe decision, and certain procedures must be followed when registering immigrant children in school to avoid violation of their civil rights. IDRA’s webpage on serving immigrant students for education resources for elementary and secondary school-aged students and their families, which includes a printable School Opening Alert, guidance published by the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of Education published in May 2014 advising school officials that activities that deny or discourage students to attend school are unlawful, guidance issued by the Texas Education Agency in August 2015, and more.
