New MATSOL/MABE/CEC Collaboration
MATSOL is pleased to announce a new collaboration between MATSOL, Massachusetts Association for Bilingual Education (MABE), and Massachusetts Council for Exceptional Children (MCEC). The Dual Language Special Education Network is for educators who support bilingual students who receive special education (or students who are bilingual and receive special education), including special educators, dual language teachers, ESL/ELL teachers and administrators. Updated Seal of Biliteracy Toolkit now available!
A new version of the Seal of Biliteracy Toolkit has been released by the Seal of Biliteracy Workgroup, with revisions made as a result of the feedback from the Seal of Biliteracy Pilot Project in Massachusetts, which resulted in over 300 Seal awards in eight school districts in Spring 2016. New! Curriculum & Multilingual Learners Facebook Group
This group was formed as a place to exchange ideas in design and
 delivery of curriculum for multilingual learners (ESL, ELD, EAL, etc.). It is open to any educator interested in this topic. The goal is to have an easily accessible, common, and open space for educators to: Share ideas around curriculum for multilingual learners (ESL, ELD, EAL, etc.); Pose problems of practice as well as possible solutions; Teams can share units and PD plans they are creating through the ESL MCU FacT trainings or other PD opportunities; Share important readings; Documents can be uploaded to the group. The group emerged out of the Massachusetts Next Generation ESL Project: Model Curriculum Units; however, this is an open group and so is not restricted to participants of the project. Citizenship Clinics
MIRA Coalition offers personalize guidance through the naturalization form, step by step, including a waiver for the federal fees if the applicant qualifies. When you attend a clinic, you will join 20-40 other individuals who are also applying for citizenship. Our Citizenship Team works together with a group of trained volunteers to go through the N-400 Application for Naturalization with you one-on-one. At a clinic you will go through 4 stations: 1) Check-in & Registration 2) Screening for Eligibility 3) Completing the Application 4) Quality Control. The whole process takes between 2 and 3 hours. We will keep a copy of your documents in our office, and receive United States Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) notices about your citizenship appointments. Non-regulatory guidance to help states, districts and schools provide effective services to improve the English language proficiency and academic achievement of English learners (ELs) through Title III of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act ESEA), as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Topics include Use of Title III funds to serve ELs; Design and delivery of language instruction educational programs, which include educators of ELs; Key information on family, parent and community engagement; Key information on distinct populations of ELs, including early learners, former ELs, immigrant students, and ELs who are also students with disabilities; Clarifications of the rights ELs have under federal civil rights law related to supports and services; and a list of publications and resources for administrators and educators who work with ELs. Rasing Children in a New Country
New translations available! Raising Children in a New Country: An Illustrated Handbook is now available in Arabic and Somali and Raising Young Children in a New Country: Supporting Early Learning and Healthy Development is now available in Nepali and Somali. BRYCS created these booklets for agencies serving refugees and immigrants in order to support their efforts to ensure that newcomer parents have the basic information they need about U.S. laws and parenting practices. Although newcomers may find the booklets useful by itself, it is primarily intended for case managers and other service providers to use together with their refugee and immigrant clients.
