Dual Language SIG

Dual language/immersion or two-way language programs are allowed under the current Chapter 71A in Massachusetts. These highly successful programs allow English language learners of a specific group to maintain their own language while serving as role models to English only speakers who are also learning a new language. Most programs exist currently in Massachusetts in Spanish. While students in these programs do very well academically on every measure, there are only a handful of these programs in Massachusetts.

MATSOL advocates for replication and creation of new programs where possible in order to insure the academic achievement of ELLs. Below we have collected resources for those currently teaching in dual immersion programs and those interested in starting programs.

Two-way Immersion SIOP
A resource document that merges  research on two way language programs and the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) model.

Two-Way Immersion Toolkit
A web-based resource for teachers, parents, and administrators involved with two-way immersion (TWI) programs, particularly those at the elementary school level. Browse the Toolkit here

Research

Organizational Resources
New Mexico Dual Immersion
A professional organization dedicated to promoting dual immersion in New Mexico. Their site include standards for the development of dual immersion program. Visit their site.
