June 2010 -- Show your commitment to the value of the Massachusetts Association of Teachers of Speakers of Other Languages (MATSOL) and help to shape its future! This year the association will nominate and membership approve a slate for several important board positions. You may nominate yourself or someone else.
Nominating candidates for office is also a valuable service to the Association and your thoughtful participation in this process will be greatly appreciated.
For a balanced board and for full representation of all important constituencies in the field and in the work and activities of MATSOL, it is important that our association fill all positions. Please help by nominating creative, independent, reflective, collaborative colleagues in the field who will follow through on the association’s behalf.
Open Positions
- Vice President (Three-year term: Vice President Oct 2010-11, President 2011-12, Past President 2012-13)
- Dual Language Special Interest Group Representative (2010-2012)
- Publisher Liaison (2010-2012)
- Website Coordinator (2010-2012)
- Advocacy Representative (2010-2012)
- Membership Secretary (2010-2013)
Qualifications and Time Commitment
Only members may serve on the MATSOL Board or as officers. The Vice President and Board Members will serve two- or three-year terms, beginning October 23, 2010 at the Annual Meeting. Board members must commit to attending our six Board meetings a year and annual retreat. Each Board member serves on the annual conference committee. The Vice President serves as President-elect in the first year, becomes President in the second year and serves as Past-president in the third year of his or her term.
Proposed candidates must agree to be available for Board work during their term. More specifically, each candidate will be asked to commit to:
- Attend no less than five Board meetings each year of the three-year term, including the Annual Meeting;
- Take an organizational role in planning and running MATSOL events and initiatives, as specified by the board position;
- Take an organizational role in MATSOL conference planning and work on-site during the MATSOL conference;
- Be available by phone for periodic Board conference calls;
- Sign MATSOL’s Board Conflict of Interest policy, divulging any direct, potential or perceived conflicts of interest with the Association’s well being or situations or relationships that may require the Board member to abstain from some work of the Board;
- Abide by the Board Policy and Procedures Manual related to roles and responsibilities of the Board member in his/her function.
Process
All nominations should be sent US Mail as a single packet. The nomination should be postmarked no later than September 1, 2010. Each nomination packet should contain:
- Nominee Identification and Contact Information: Name, job title and affiliation, mailing address, email, phone and area(s) of work.
- Nominee Statement: A brief statement from the nominee indicating a) his or her interest in serving, b) any special qualifications
- Nomination Statement (if not self-nominated): A brief statement from the nominator attesting to the nominee’s qualifications.

All nominees will be contacted before the annual meeting to discuss the positions for which he or she has been nominated and to confirm interest. A slate of final candidates for the Board will be created by the MATSOL Recording Clerk who will present the slate to the membership at the annual meeting for approval. The new term of office will begin on October 23, 2011 at the Annual Meeting.
