Mastery of necessary content becomes progressively more difficult for many of our ELLs as they move up through middle school and into high school. The gaps widen and high stakes testing mandates become more and more problematic.
We would be interested in knowing from you what the most pressing issues are. How can MATSOL board and members support and inform each other in ways that will maximize opportunities for success for our secondary ELL population? Are professional development offerings adequately addressing the issues presented by the secondary ELL population? Is our practice linked to research and policy? Are we advocating for appropriate programs and support for these students in our schools?
Let’s get some dialogue started, and as the bigger questions emerge we can work together to create support and advocacy for secondary teachers and ELL students at the upper grade levels with varying levels of English proficiency, educational background and literacy.
