MATSOL Task Force on Racial Justice

Purpose: To develop an action plan with specific steps MATSOL can take to address issues of racial justice and equity.

MATSOL is seeking members to participate in a Task Force on Racial Justice. Membership of Task Force will include, as much as possible, members from different racial, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds, and representing different educational sectors serving English learners (including but not limited to PK12, higher education, adult education) and job types. Members with experience or expertise addressing racial justice issues are encouraged to apply.

Background: In June 2020, the MATSOL Board issued a Statement on Racial Justice in response to the George Floyd killing and protests in support of Black Lives Matter. As part of that statement, the Board made a commitment to create an action plan with specific steps that MATSOL can take to address issues of racial justice and make change.

Major Responsibilities and Steps:

  1. Analyze feedback from the MATSOL membership survey and member meeting to identify possible actions.
  2. Research action steps from other like organizations.
  3. Analyze research to identify and prioritize actions, consistent with MATSOL’s mission, to include in the action plan.
  4. Identify potential opportunities to collaborate with other local organizations (educational and other) to work on common goals.
  5. Draft the action plan.
  6. Submit the plan to the MATSOL Board of Directors by September 21, 2020.

Organization & Reporting Structure:

  • Task Force members are appointed by the Board of Directors.
  • Membership will include MATSOL members, Board members and staff.
  • The Task Force reports to the Board of Directors.

Time commitment:

  • July 2020 - September 2020
  • The specific schedule will be determined by the Task Force, but you should anticipate 2-3 hours of work a week including online meetings.
