We are pleased to announce our Keynote Speaker: Margo Gottlieb
Initiating Change: From Academic Language to Academic Languaging
It’s time to re-envision academic language from a fixed set of terms and linguistic rules to picturing academic languaging as a suite of dynamic student-centered practices. In shifting the focus to making language more personalized and actionable, we encourage multilingual learners to draw on their linguistic and cultural resources inside and out of school as they engage in challenging content. The goal is for students to actively use language to develop confidence and gain agency, thus becoming empowered.
In this keynote, we explore the rationale for and the value of academic languaging and its applicability across K-12 contexts. In offering student-led content-driven examples, we illustrate how the shift to academic languaging becomes the lens for deep learning. Ultimately, when students actively participate in the learning process, academic language development becomes a powerful springboard for designing and enacting meaningful educational experiences for our multilingual learners
Margo Gottlieb, Ph.D., co-founder and lead developer of WIDA at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, collaborates in designing standards frameworks and their derivative tools.
