Description

This online course focuses on an asset-based approach to welcoming and supporting newcomers (students who have recently arrived in the United States). Explore the mindsets, programming models, and instructional practices, participants develop the knowledge and skills to meet the needs of multilingual newcomers and support them in achieving academic and linguistic success.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Create culturally responsive welcoming practices to engage newcomers and build partnerships with their families.
  • Examine practices to support and instruct newcomers from varied backgrounds and with differing instructional and emotional needs.
  • Use an asset-based approach to build upon a newcomer's first language and experiences as a foundation for new learning.
  • Explore ways to maximize English learning and ensure access to grade-level content.

For teachers, administrators, specialists and support staff

PDPs

Fulfills requirement for 15 PDPs in English Learner Education (SEI) for license recertification.
