MATSOL's First Joint SIG Meeting: Advocacy and Family-School Partnership!

The Advocacy Special Interest Group brings together educators who want learn about and get support for advocacy at local, state, and federal levels to advocate for English Learners (ELs), their families, their teachers, and the field of TESOL & Bilingual education.

The Family-School Partnership brings together educators working with linguistically and culturally diverse families. The group will share information and resources, collaborate, and work together to address emerging issues affecting families in our schools. Visit the Family-School Partnership SIG page.

Join us for this special convergence of two forces for all things good!
The Advocacy Steering Committee have been in contact with ESL teachers all over the US and MA that are in need of guidance in immigration law. There is a lot of confusion as to how to help the families and students that approach us with questions on the best way of proceeding with their path to citizenship. Teachers are overwhelmed with the responsibility of how to help, and they are not trained in this area, nor do they have these answers. We feel teachers must know who to contact and how to explain the process to our families.
With this in mind, we invited guest speakers Jessica Chicco and Margalit Tepper from MIRA Coalition to discuss the Basics of Immigration
In this presentation, they will discuss an overview of common immigration statuses, privileges and restrictions associated with these statuses, and common pathways to obtaining legal immigration status, including a close look at protection programs and pathways to status for youth and young adults. They will present an overview of basic rights for all regardless of immigration status, and tools students and families can use to prepare for worst-case scenarios. They will also share resources that may be helpful for teachers working with immigrant student populations.
The leaders and members of the Family-School Partnership SIG will learn from these local experts and collaborate together with other members to build strong, trusting relationships with students' families!
Come and learn from these local experts. We're all here to help, come and get started.
