Prerequisite: Completion of the MATSOL SLIFE Institute I in November 2013, April 2014, April 2015, or December 2015.

Description/Objectives

This institute further builds on the previous SLIFE Institute, specifically focusing on the development of academic language and content as the academic ways of thinking become more familiar. Participants will practice using the MALP Implementation Rubric and the MALP learning environment chart, or the equivalent (by permission of the instructors).

Prerequisites

This advanced institute is open only to participants who completed the introductory SLIFE Institute I: Culturally Responsive Teaching in Massachusetts: English Language Learners with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education (SLIFE) presented by MATSOL in November 2013, April 2014, or April 2015.

Presenters

Andrea DeCapua, Ed.D. Educational consultant, researcher, and adjunct faculty at New York University.

Helaine W. Marshall, Ph.D. Associate professor and director of language education programs at Long Island University–Hudson.

Recognized national experts on students with limited or interrupted formal education (SLIFE), Helaine and Andrea have published and presented extensively on this population of language learners.
