MATSOL Currents Submission Guidelines

Type of Submissions, with suggested word length:

  • Feature Articles (1200-1500 words) on the topic of teacher education, teaching methodology, educational research, language acquisition, professional development, program administration, sociocultural issues, etc. Feature articles should normally contain references to related data and/or scholarship in our field, plus analysis and/or personal observations and experiences by the author. Citation should conform to the requirements of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association ( http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/).
  • Reports (500-900 words) on conferences or presentations, activities of allied organizations, descriptions of community or school projects and programs, etc.
  • Personal Accounts (500-700 words), stories, and tips about specific language-learning events in and outside the classroom. We welcome contributions from students.
  • Reviews(400-750 words) of materials such as teacher resource materials, textbooks, materials for the classroom library, apps, websites, and software for language learning. 

Photos

Accompanying photos are a plus! Photos should come directly from the camera (not embedded in a document) and should be at least 1000x1000 pixels (1 megapixel) or at least "large" size from a mobile phone. A tip from our graphic designer is that the file sizes for photos should be roughly 200KB or larger.

Possible topics

A one- or two-page report on something that's happening in your educational program or professional group: Keep us informed about what's happening in your part of the ESOL world!

  • Suggestions for the ESL, ESOL, EFL, EIL, SLIFE, Bilingual, Two Way/Dual Immersion, or Sheltered English Instruction classroom
  • Adult literacy; language and literacy for the workplace
  • Parent, family, and community involvement
  • Teacher education/Professional learning (from the point of view of the teacher educator OR the teacher participating in professional learning)
  • Advocacy issues concerning students or educators
  • Issues of current concern, such as SLIFE
  • Research on language education
  • Sociocultural issues
  • Experiences of students in our programs

Submission Deadlines

  • October 15 (Fall/Winter issue)
  • May 1 (Spring/Summer issue)

Review Procedure

Articles are reviewed following a double blind procedure, meaning that the reviewers do not know the identity of the author and the author does not know the identity of the reviewers.

No manuscript is guaranteed publication, even if it is commissioned. Submissions may be accepted without revision, returned with requested edits, or declined pending substantive revision. Don’t hesitate to contact us! If we think your article is potentially of interest to our readers, then we will work with you to get it into shape for publication.

Required for Submission

  1. File Format: Microsoft Word document, or a compatible format, with no special formatting.
  2. Contact Information (not for publication): Your email address, mailing address, and a daytime phone number.
  3. Biographical Statement (for publication, exactly as you would like it to appear in Currents): Your full name, affiliation, an email address, a short biographical statement (40 words maximum), and a head shot (see note above on submitting a photo).
