Call for Proposals - MATSOL Conference
Submit a proposal to present at the MATSOL 2018 Conference on May 30-June 1, 2018. MATSOL encourages engaging, interactive presentations that make the theory to practice connection. Successful proposals include practical classroom activities informed by current research and pedagogy, demonstrations of successful instructional practices, examinations of current issues in education, and research that informs educators in the Massachusetts context. Presentations should engage the audience through hands-on or interactive activities when possible. Proposals due December 1, 2017. View Call for Proposals

Updated Seal of Biliteracy Toolkit
Au updated Seal of Biliteracy Toolkit is available for schools participating in the pilot project in Massachusetts. 
The toolkit was revised and updated by the workgroup with input from schools that participated in the Seal of Biliteracy Pilot Project during the 2016-17 school year. The revised toolkit includes new resources for use in implementing the Seal of Biliteracy including additional models and examples of rubrics and portfolios; updated table to elaborate on testing instruments for levels of award; options for determining Seal award using testing in first years of implementation; expanded FAQ section; and a list of Workgroup participants in the three years of the pilot. Lasell College Offer for MATSOL Members
Are your students Bilingual/English Learners with Disabilities?  Lasell College offers a 100% online certificate to prepare teachers with strategies to ensure equitable outcomes for English language learners (ELLs) with disabilities.  The Bilingual/English Learners with Disabilities Certificate (ELL/SPED) is comprised of four 6-week online courses.  MATSOL members receive a discount for PDPs. Next class begins October 25. To take advantage of the discount: 1) Sign up at the MATSOL website to verify members and qualify for the discount; and 2) visit the Lasell website to learn more about the course and register.

A Spanish-English high school proves learning in two languages can boost graduation rates
When the Boston Public Schools opened the Margarita Muñiz Academy in 2012, it was a first-of-its-kind dual-language high school meant to address issues faced by the city’s growing Hispanic population. At the time, Hispanic students were both the most likely to drop out of the city’s schools and the least likely to enroll in college when compared to black, white and Asian students. Opportunity Youth - College Success
Most young people face challenges on the road to a college degree. They must make important decisions about career preparation, financing a college education, and how college and work fit together to ensure income security while in school. These challenges often seem particularly daunting for two groups of students: opportunity youth—the 5 million youth nationally aged 16-24 who are disconnected from both work and school—and first-generation college students.
